Inaz Javaheri, a 15-year-old student, joined the nationwide protests in Kermanshah on 23 August 2022 and was killed by direct gunfire from security forces on 8 October 2022. The daughter of Abdollah and Forouzan, with an older sister, Aysan.
Inaz’s story is one of countless young lives impacted by the struggle for justice. Information about her remains limited, as the regime suppressed coverage of her life and death.
Following the murder of Mahsa Zhina Amini in September 2022, which led to nationwide protests, the Iranian regime attempted to downplay their involvement and obscure the truth of Mahsa’s death. Inaz, like many other students, joined the protests to voice her opposition to the regime’s gender apartheid policies. On 8 October, the security forces intensified their attacks on gatherings, firing live ammunition at unarmed demonstrators. Among these forces, a sniper targeted Inaz under a shoot-to-kill order, fatally striking her in the head and heart. She died instantly.
After her death, Inaz’s family faced severe threats and intimidation, as security forces forbade them from publicly speaking about their daughter’s murder or making any public announcements. Ultimately, the authorities released her body for a quiet, heavily guarded burial in her hometown on 9 October 2022.
The Iranian people and history will not forget the atrocities committed by the regime. Inaz was among the unknown but brave young Iranians who peacefully protested for justice, facing military forces unarmed. Her sacrifice, and the sacrifices of thousands more, are a testament to the enduring desire for freedom and democracy.
We won’t let the blood of Inaz and thousands of Iranians who have fought against the brutal regime go in vain. We celebrate their lives and remember their bravery in their peaceful war for justice, freedom, and democracy in Iran.
